2022: An anniversary year for TMC

Not only does 2022 mark The Material Collective’s 10th year, but many of our lines are also celebrating milestone years.

15 years of Parasoleil

The idea of Parasoleil arose in Founder Uriah Bueller’s mind in the canyons of the Grand Canyon from the question: “What do you do?” Uriah with uninterrupted time sitting in the canyon realized that his work centered around framing space to make people feel more welcome… and that is the origin of Parasoleil’s history. Since then, the company has evolved their products to help shade, divide and clad Architecture in interesting and artistic ways made to weather the storm and awe the public whenever the pass a panel, stair railing or overhead made by the company. A true “Oh the places you’ll go” story come to life and ever evolving and refining as the company’s story unfolds.

20 Years of Kirei

“Clean,” “pure,” and “truthful,” these are the multiple meanings of Kirei’s name. They started as a company making Architectural Recycled Panels for the A&D community to use in their designs, always exploring products recycled and sustainable in their offerings. Most recently they added Shoe waste in a collaboration with Nike, using Nike's post-consumer textile material, Nike Grind, a combination of manufacturing scrap and end-of-life shoes material, and added it into Kirei’s Air Baffle to create a baffle system that is 40% pre-consumer recycled content, and  100% recyclable. Most recently, Kirei joined the Carnegie fold in a mutually environmentally minded partnership with double the environmentally minded innovation sure to happen in the near future. Keep your eye on this pairing for further sustainable evolution. For more on Kirei’s 20 years and its intention beyond them, read this article.

40 Years of Integra

Integra’s reached their 40 year mark and have come a long way from offering just one lounge series. Today the company has grown into two buildings, the second a 52,000sf facility across the street from the original . The company still holds true to their component based design ideology and has continued to be a family affair, with Owners Monroe and Deena along with their children, Chandra Putnam, Tracey Putnam, and Jeff Putnam comprise the current leadership team and “look forward to new opportunities in the coming months and years to come,” to quote Monroe, as he reflected over the last 40 years and beyond. To read more on the company’s milestone year, read the press release here

In Out is the way

Alfredo Haeberli designed a new furniture collection that straddles both private and work spaces: The In Out Collection. The trapezoidal form hugs users that sit within it, and shelters those who sit in front of it to work, shading them from noises within its fabric wrapped form. It is a design that Haeberli has said sits between the idea of Office at Home and the idea of Home at the Office that has emerged from the beginnings of the Covid pandemic.

Contact me for more information on this exciting live work solution that won Gold at NeoCon for Lounge seating.

You can also head over to the official In Out webpage on Andreu World’s website, or Alfredo Haeberli’s website and pdf for more insight and sketches of this innovative collection.

Meet United Fabrics #522 Modern Art Collection

Jackson: A dynamic brushstroke pattern, Jackson captures the energy and emotion of abstract expressionism. The loose composition is inspired by the intuitive act of putting paintbrush to canvas, and the mark making is inspired by the energy produced by the creative process.

Rothko: Inspired by large-scale color field paintings, Rothko embraces the bold use of color in high contrast combinations. This playful, yet modern take on a cabana stripe is enhanced by the tactile quality of the woven texture. Rothko comes in high contrast color combinations providing a fresh stripe to coordinate with a variety of patterns.

Pop: Pop is a large-scale pattern inspired by the layered process of screen- printing. The boldly graphic dot motif is arranged in a color blocked layout creating one-of-a-kind combinations.

Rubix: Rubix is a rectilinear pattern inspired by the clean lines and gridwork of mid-century modern architecture and design. With bright, bold, and far from basic color combinations this deconstructed plaid catches the eye.

Toggle: Toggle is a signature United Fabrics statement pattern. The irregular block shapes provide an upscale contemporary aesthetic. New colors such as Lemon Drop and Terra Rosa bring vivid interpretations to this upbeat pattern.

Kudos: Kudos is a versatile texture woven in a broad range of hues. The color combinations bring maximum impact to modern spaces both indoors and out. Kudos is the perfect tactile addition to mix and match in a variety of upholstery applications.

Vincent: Coming in a single color, Vincent gives in impressionistic feel in a light neutral hue.

Vestige: Like a wrought iron fence pattern, Vestige has a bold and playful pattern ready to add interest to both hospitality and residential designs—in color or black and white.

Quotes on the Modern Art Collection

“Modern Art inspires creativity and artistic exploration. It was a pleasure to partner with Sunbrella on our third contract upholstery collection together and our intent was to honor the role that Modern Art plays in the design world and in our everyday lives,” said Lindsey Josepayt, director of design and marketing at United Fabrics. “The patterns in the collection were inspired by richly saturated color field paintings, the bold use of graphic shapes in pop art and, of course, gestural mark-making in abstract expressionism. This collection invokes designers to make a statement with not just the art on the wall but the functional design of the furniture in a space.”

“Art, expressionism, and creativity are central to the design landscape,” said Greg Voorhis, executive design director at Sunbrella. “This Modern Art collection is a celebration of color and artistic creativity and is meant to inspire countless design possibilities. We’re proud to once again partner with the United team to provide soft and comfortable fabrics with the added durability required for commercial spaces.”

“With the collection being an art inspired collection, we couldn’t help but put together an exhibition featuring the collection in larger samples for designers to view at our showroom. It’ll be on display for the indefinitely and can be seen by appointment.” – Mary Blanchard, Owner of The Material Collective

Meet Õru and Mariya, two takes on circular furniture designs.

Andreu World unveiled two collections that focus on circular economical furniture designs at Neocon: Patricia Urquiola’s Õru Collection and Philippe Starck’s Mariya Collection. Despite working to the same sustainable end goal, the designs are very different from one another.

The Õru Collection has inspiration from a Japanese feeling and the 70’s era. It’s rounded and playful.

The Mariya Collection is very sharp with 90 degree lines, and it capitalizes on its plywood structure being designed with joinery that needs no glue or screws to hold itself together.

As a bonus, the Mariya has arms that serve as both rests and storage of things users like to display or use within arm’s reach.

Both collections are designed to be easily separated into their separate components to aid in recycling and reuse as sustainability in design from beginning to end of use is an important focus in Andreu World’s processes and the design world has taken notice. Both won awards at NeoCon, the Õru Table earning a Gold Award for Table design and the Mariya for Innovation in Seating. For more information on these pieces, contact me.

Pomp and… Parade

Check out this pair of new United Fabric releases… Pomp & Parade. Both are playful designs that bring interest to a piece of furniture…

Pomp is fun and almost looks like construction paper cut outs arranged together. Despite the many different shapes, its singular hues make for a subtler output.

Parade has so much movement, like stacks and stacks of paper laser cut in the opposite direction of the stacks, creating striped zigzag-like patterns marching like rows across its expanse—to different drums, er, directions.

Both fabrics feature Nanotex Soil/Stain Protection properties to give your COM upholstered furniture more protection than your average fabric. For samples, pricing, yardage availability and more information, contact me.

Circling back around is the natural progression

A furniture company creating their own fabric line… makes sense. And to make it one with a circular mindset—creating with recycled materials and being able to recycle it at the end of the product's life, that not only makes sense, but it should be required in this day and age! Circular ONE® Textiles is Andreu World’s first fabric release and it encapsulates the idea that all producers of products—whatever the kind, must think of, for all material is finite. It has to be replenished, cherished, created in a way that is durable and long lasting, and yet easily broken down and recycled into materials that can be reused again in some way, shape or form, not immediately labeled waste after it’s useful life—which often, upholstery or furniture is placed in the trash then thought to be turned back into useful material.

To be specific, Circular ONE® textiles are made of 100% recycled from PET plastic bottles and textile waste. No concept of garbage exists in nature and that was the driving force to the design of this fabric. Striving for a fabric that is a 100% circular economy design. This is just one of the many steps Andreu world has taken to better their manufacturing practices. If you are looking to specify a fabric for your Andreu World furniture specifications and desire a sustainable solution, upholster it in Circular ONE®.

A chair that crosses Artisan Tradition and Technology in woodworking

Andreu World’s collaboration with Philippe Starck does not stop at Adela Rex and Forest, here is Solo, a stacking chair that celebrates wood in both solid and plywood forms. It recently won Gold for Stacking Chairs at NeoCon 2022 as well as a #Metropolislikes nod from Metropolis Magazine.

Its components are to the minimum of what is needed to create the chair… It is made for a circular economy, meaning the componentry that was puzzled together is also separable for recycling at the product’s end of life.

Solo crosses old and new into something other and the sum of both. Its curving arm is a detail that stands out with its ergonomic curvature that adapts to the physiognomy of the arm in a natural way and also makes it stackable.

This chair’s sit is not to be missed—its curving arm detail is one that needs to be experienced—not to mention, its shape also makes it stackable. Come test it out in our showroom or ask for a sample to be delivered to your office by contacting me.

A system for Cladding

Parasoleil continues to evolve their cladding system, this time creating a new substructure for cladding applications: ParaClad™.

From the panels to the connections, nuts, and bolts to connect to the exteriors of buildings, the entire system is designed by Parasoleil dropping the “how to” off contractors lists for an easier install process.

ParaClad™ uses tube aluminum structure that is corrosion resistant. It is pre-engineered to handle up to 33 PSF design load pressures and has a multitude of assembly options to meet your every design intent with bolt and fastening options that can support formed panels, kinetic panels, really, anything your mind can design.

Last but not least, ParaClad makes for a one-sub installation, reducing the number of trades to complete the work, which means less coordination, fewer communication delays between trades, and a better result at a lower overall price. For more information, contact me.

The Material Collective as seen through Veri Peri colored glasses…

For the first time in naming their color of the year, Pantone’s release was actually created to be the color of the year, a periwinkle inspired is it blue, is it violet color that evokes the ever changing times we lived through and are still living in. Coined Very Peri, the color is a hopeful blue violet… it’s a chameleon imbued with the spirit of both change and resiliency. It is a courageous future forward color, and we celebrate its release here by showcasing The Material Collectives own Very Peri-esque offerings. For more information, contact me.

The Art of Cladding

Cladding is a unique design opportunity that opens Architects and Designers up to artful territory, adding interest to a building’s exterior—all this while adding an extra layer of protection from the elements.

In using more artful cladding options, designs can become an intuitive wayfinding feature. And depending on the opacity or transparency, it also offers ranges of shade, lighting, visibility to exterior applications like bridges, walkways and stairwells.

If you are currently designing such spaces and want a unique installation, contact me to review Parasoleil’s patterns and mounting options and remember that customization is always welcome.

Which Dolly is for you?

At The Material Collective, we love discovering similarity between our lines and the most recent similarity we found were two fabrics with the same name and animal inspiration, Dolly. Camira released their Dolly made of 100% British Wool Fleece to the US Market in the fall of 2020—lucky us—and it makes us all want to hug and squeeze it Elmyra style. United Fabrics also has a Dolly of their own that is a Faux Shearling. Both fabrics come in neutral colorways that are true to Sheep coloration… if soft and plush is what you're looking to specify, contact me for a sample and more information on these soft as lamb fabrics.
