2020 brought on a lot of changes in terms of conferences and conventions, most shut down or at best modified to be entirely virtual... A plus to this is that many are still up, and you can sign yourself up around the world and experience the lectures and exhibitions despite being late to the party. Bolon was featured at the DDW, Dutch Design Week 2020, in a show called Rethinking Plastic that paints a tale of plastic that looks to the resetting of our thoughts on the material, because it is not all bad nor black and white. One of the featured designers stated: “Maybe we just aren't using it properly.”
The exhibit features reuse of water bottles, plastic bags, clothes, and the creation of new bio-plastics from sources such as agar agar, corn, dandelions, chicory, coffee grounds, leeks and corn cobs. It also shows the range of products one can create with the material... and how it can be as thin as a textile, translucent as glass or tough yet flexible as a building material for cars, houses and how it can even be eaten by a mealworm and then turned into food... Literally food recycled from waste!
Bolon was included in the exhibition for their 70 year history of upcycling scraps into flooring and how they constantly innovate to make their product recyclable using plastics without plasticizers and other toxic materials. Always researching and implementing ways to better their product with the best methods on creating it, the most beautiful patterns and textures and means to recycle when the product has reached the end of its use.
